New display highlights materials for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 – October 15. The celebration first began as “Hispanic Heritage Week” in 1968 but then expanded to a month in 1988. According to the Congressional resolution, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time honor the achievements of Hispanics in the United States (National Hispanic Heritage Month, 2009). To celebrate Hispanic Heritage month, the library has created a display of books and videos on the topic. Books included in the display include:

Harvest of Empire: a history of Latinos in America by Juan Gonzalez

Latinos: Remaking America edited by Marcelo M. Suárez-Orozco and Mariela M. Páez

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Mi Lengua: Spanish as a heritage language in the United States edited by Ana Roca and M. Cecilia Colombi

Latinos, Inc. the marketing and making of a people by Arlene Dávila

Playing America’s Game: baseball, Latinos and the Color Line by Adrian Burgos, Jr.

José, Can you see? Latinos on and off Broadway by Alberto Sandoval-Sanchez

Out of the Fringe: Contemporary Latina/Latino theatre and performance edited by Caridad Svich and María Teresa Marrero

Translation Nation: defining a new American identity in the Spanish speaking United States by Héctor Tobar

Included in the display are the films:

El Cantante, El Mariachi, and Quinceañera
